What are ChatGTP Plugins?

Plugins are an option for companies to provide their own "App" within the OpenAI ChatGPT ecosystem so that users can automate tasks easily. As a user - on the other hand - you might be looking for a QR-code generator on Google but instead, you can just easily search in the ChatGPT Plugins store for "QR" and activate a QR generator plugin. All done. You do not need to install any additional tools anymore or search in Google for any "free option".

Are you thinking about the next App store? You are right! It seems like OpenAI is becoming the new App store but far more powerful: OpenAI launched plugins, which enable people to automate tasks from within ChatGPT's interface. You can ask ChatGPT to perform a task in another app for you. Unfortunately, ChatGPT plugins, are not accessible to free users and currently in Alpha testing phase (add yourself on the waiting list).

What am I able to do with the plugins version?

• ChatGPT gets internet-access, meaning that it is not anymore limited to knowledge up to 2021 and can provide information with the use of Microsoft Bing. Thus, you can retrieve real-time info, e.g. stock process, latest news etc. by using WebPilot Plugin.
• First ChatGPT plugins have been created by Expedia, FiscalNote, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, Milo, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Speak, Wolfram, and Zapier.

We see ChatGPT is becoming more and more a virtual assistant being able to also execute “real actions” on behalf of the user, e.g. book a table, order food, and more. By integrating explicit access to external data, language models can become even smarter by acting with more evidence-based responses. Of course, there is a risk that the plugins could lead to security problems, e.g. by executing risky actions in the backend.
