A Comprehensive Guide to MyGPTs and Alternatives

Nina Habicht • Dec 25, 2023

This article outlines how easily you can build your own bot with different tools. We explain what is possible with GPTs and what is not.

What are MyGPTs or GPTs?

MyGPTs or GPTs are customized "ChatGPTs" offered by OpenAI for your own purpose. They can be also offered on an OpenAI GPT store for other users. That means, you can build your own Chatbot for your specific domain.

What are useful GPTs?

There are many useful GPTs: Some to mention are:

  • DALL-E: Let me turn your imagination into imagery.
  • Data Analysis: Drop in any files and I can help analyze and visualize your data.
  • ChatGPT Classic: The latest version of GPT-4 with no additional capabilities.
  • Web Browser: I can browse the web to help you gather information or conduct research.

How to build GPTs?

Anybody with a ChatGPT Plus account can build a "GPT". First, think about what you want to build. For that it make sense to think about the use case first:

Is there a daily task you want to be able to do faster?

For example you can easily build an information bot about your PDFs you want to get answers from. Or a bot providing information about your company services?

How to build MyGPTs?

There are three simple steps:

1) Buy a paid version of ChatGPT

2) Go to the settings area on the left-down side

3) Go to "My GPTs"

4) Click on create the "My GPT"

5) Let you guide through the creation process

Step 1: Go to "My GPTs" in the paid ChatGPT Plus version

Step 2: Click on "create a GPT"

Step 3: Let yourself guide through the creation of a GPT.

Is there an option for companies to use GPTs?

Yes, companies can use the ChatGPT Enterprise option. The enterprise option is more secure, using SOC 2 type 2 compliance standards, and data from ChatGPT Enterprise and the API Platform (after March 1, 2023) isn't used for training OpenAI's models. To enable features like conversation history data is retained, however, companies can control how long the data is retained (e.g. deleted data is removed within 30 days from the systems). This however means, your whole company has to use the Enterprise version to enable tenant-based creation and scaling of GPTs in a compliant way.

This could be a suitable solution for deploying your own bots in the US, but in European countries, stricter non-functional requirements apply:

  • All data has to be processed (and / or stored) in the country itself.
  • In the "worst case": No US provider is allowed

What about confidential data being sent to GPTs?

OpenAI takes actions to avoid personal data being processed. They, however, state that by using the Business Offerings (e.g. Enterprise option) the content entered by users in your GPTs will not be used for OpenAI's model trainings: "we may use content submitted to ChatGPT, DALL·E, and our other services for individuals to improve model performance. Content may include chats with GPTs".

Will MyGPT builders have access to specific conversations with their GPTs?

According to OpenAI's statements this is not the case: "For the time being, builders will not have access to specific conversations with their GPTs to ensure user privacy. However, OpenAI is considering future features that would provide builders with analytics and feedback mechanisms to improve their GPTs without compromising privacy."

Can I integrate GPTs into my Website?

The short answer is no. You cannot use MyGPTs outside the ecosystem of ChatGPT. Meaning, once you have build your own GPT users can only use it in the MyGPT dashboard within ChatGPT Plus account. You can build with the assistant API product from OpenAI an own B2B application that can be integrated on any endpoint like a website, app or other platforms.

There is a hack where you can use Voiceflow in combination with your GPTs to deploy your GPT to a website.

What are the alternatives to GPTs to build your assistant?

There is the option to use the MyAssistant API or to build an assistant by using chatbot tools. We tested both and found that they still lack when it comes to reliable answers. There are certain answers that you want to have under your control as a company. The best way to keep full control of this information is to fully control the so-called RAG process yourself, and not rely on "black-box systems" such as GPTs or the MyAssistant API.

Many companies are reluctant when implementing llm-based products because they fear bein confronted with high costs. Especially for medium-sized companies which have not the ressouces or enough capacity to deploy and oprimize their AI models nor to set up an own infrastructure with MLOps. As described in our article about sustainability of Gen. AI applications , cloud and performance costs of running an llm can become very high. What are the cost types when implementing OpenAI or other llms? T here are four types of costs related to llms: Inference Costs Setup and Maintenance Costs Costs depending on the Use Case Other Costs related to Generative AI products What are inference costs? An llm has been trained on a huge library of books, articles, and websites. Now, when you ask it something, it uses all that knowledge to make its best guess or create something new that fits what you asked for. That process of coming up with answers or creating new text based on what it has learned is called inference in LLMs . Usually, developers would call a large language model like GPT-4. But here comes the "but": usually not only large language models account to the total costs when running the final product. To explain: LLMs can be used to classify data (e.g undestand that the text talks about "searching a new car insurance"), for summarization, for translation and for many other tasks. In this blog you will learn about the alternatives to ChatGPT and OpenAI. Where is Bard better than ChatGPT? Bard is the response to OpenAI's ChatGPT. What makes Bard so different to OpenAI? It is free! So you can try it out here whereas ChatGPT costs $20 per month. Another advantage is the microphone on the desktop version to directly speak in your question and get a response. Bard has internet access whereas ChatGPT you need to jump from one service (Web Browsing) to the other Bard covers far more languages (265 as of October 2023) Some drawbacks: it is not able to generate pictures. With ChatGPT DALL E-3 you can generate pictures. Bard only offers you a nice description. Where is Claude better than ChatGPT? Claude is the version of ChatGPT developed by the company Anthropic. This tool is currently accessible only in the UK and US, and not yet available in Switzerland. You might consider using Nord VPN to explore its functionality in your country. Claude has one big advantage to ChatGPT: It can process more "context" ( Generative AI from A to Z ), meaning the input token (100 token equals around 75 words) can be up to 100'000 tokens (75'000 words!). GPT-3 has a limit of 4096 tokens (3072 words) and GPT-4 of 8192 tokens (= 6000 words). So when you want to upload huge files, use Claude.
